The Sankofa Foundation was established as a 501c(3) organization in 1997 under the auspices of Xi Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The name “Sankofa” is a word in the Ghanaian Twi language, which translates to “Go back and get it”. This symbolizes taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge. 

 

The Foundation’s mission is to support the underserved youth in the Dallas metropolitan area through delivery of high-quality mentoring and outreach initiatives. Our programming focuses on the importance of education, development of character, self-esteem, teaching life skills, and the promotion of good citizenship. To carry out its mission, the Sankofa Foundation has partnered leading non-profit and local educational institutions to have a greater influence on the lives of our youth.
